With Texas Holdem being so popular these days, you may not know that 7 Card Stud is still being played in many place, both online and off line. This is one of the older Poker games and those who play it often love it. 7 Card Stud is a game that can take years to master, but it is well worth the effort.

The General Game

You can play 7 Card Stud with 2 to 8 players. For the most part, it is played as a fixed limit betting game, but there are some variations on this. These variations are known as spread limit games. For traditional 7 Card Stud, everyone antes into the pot and this if followed by five betting rounds.

The Ante

The use of the ante is one of the aspects of the game that is changing somewhat at time goes by. In the old days, when 7 Card Stud was played in basements and back rooms, the ante was a standard part of the game. With the explosion of online casinos, the use of the ante varies. Some will use it and some will not.

For those tables and gaming rooms that do use the ante, this is how it works.

The stakes of the table that you want to play will determine the amount of the ante. For example, a one dollar ante is normal if you are playing on a $ 10-20 table. This represents 10 percent of the small blind. You can also find much smaller antes, such as $ 0.25 in a $ 1-2 game table. This represents 25 percent of the small blind.

The Deal and Third Street

In 7 Card Stud, everyone is dealt two cards, face down. These are the hole cards. They also get one card, face up. The player with the lowest card showing must "bring in" and has to bet half the small bet. After this, players can call, fold, or raise. This action is known as 3rd street.

Fourth Street

The Dealer will now deal out one card to those still in the game. This card is face up and another round of betting takes place. From now on, the player with the best exposed hand begins the betting.

Fifth Street

As you have probably noticed, in 7 Card Stud the rounds are known as streets. For Fifth street, the dealer gives out another card, face up, to those players still in the game. If the game is played in a fixed-limit format, this is where the big bet would kick in.

Sixth Street

Another face up card is dealt to each player, followed by a round of betting.

Seventh Street

Each player is dealt a final hole card, followed by the final round of betting.

In 7 Card Stud, if the game has 8 players and you run out of cards, one card is placed on the table and it is shared by all the players.

Winning in 7 Card Stud

Using all the cards that a player has, he or she makes the best five-card Poker hand. The highest hand wins.
