Poker – Bankroll Management Tip

One guy was asking questions about money management and why is he winning a lot of money for a period of time and after that losing his entire stack to an unbelievable hand.

One rule of cash game bankroll management - do not sit at a table with more than 10% of your bankroll. Let's say for example, you have about 1200 $ and you want to play a 100NL game, then you may do that easily, without violation to any bankroll management rules.

Now, what a lot of people do not understand, is - if you win money at the table you are playing, then, following the bankroll management rules, you have to quit that table. For example you still have those 1200 in your account and you are playing a 100NL table with max buy-in and due to lucky circumstances you manage to double up. Now you have 1300 in your account and 200 $ at a poker table. Consider this - you would not be following bankroll management rules if you were to buy-in with $ 200 at a table, would you? So why are you still there? Just leave and join another table. In online poker that's very easy.

In live cash game it's not that easy because you have very limited table choice usually unless you live near a big casino.

So we have reached an agreement, I hope. By leaving a table, you do not lose anything. Some people think that some tables are luckier than others, but that's not true. It just seems that way. And once in a while you will run in to a hand that's impossible to fold, but you will be beat and lose a huge amount of money, which you could not afford to lose in the first place.

The same set of rules applies to short stack strategy. If you are playing as a short stack at a table (meaning you bought in with the minimum amount of chips allowed), you have to leave after each double up, because your strategy involves risk reduction based on money involved in play. So after the double up, you simply have too much to lose to continue playing there. Just move on to the next table and cash in the winnings.
