Mississippi Stud Poker is a five card stud poker game that is very easy to learn if you understand poker hand rankings. It's a very popular table game that's found in almost every major gaming jurisprudence.
The objective is to wager for a good poker hand where winning payouts are made according to a pre-determined pay table. The better your hand is the greater the payouts are. The dealer does not play.
How to Play
All players must first make an ante bet in the appropriate betting circle. The dealer will then deal each player two cards face down from a standard 52 card deck. Three community cards will also be placed face down in the areas marked 3rd Street, 4th street, and 5th Street. Players must then look at their cards to decide if they want to stay in the game or fold based on the strength of their two card hand. If the player folds, he or she must slide their two cards face down toward the dealer, and the ante bet will be collected. (It's important not to reveal the down cards to the dealer or the other players.) If the player continues play he or she may wager 1 to 3X their ante in the betting circle marked 3rd Street.
The dealer then turns over a 3rd Street community card, which can be used by all players towards their five card poker hand. This process is repeated for 4th street, and 5th street. Each time a community card is disclosed players must bet 1 to 3X or fold. The dealer then turns over the remaining players two cards. The pay tables are as follows:
Royal Flush - 500 to 1
Straight Flush - 100 to 1
Four of a Kind - 40 to 1
Full House - 10 to 1
Flush - 6 to 1
Straight - 4 to 1
Three of a Kind - 3 to 1
Two Pair - 2 to 1
Pair of Jacks or Better - 1 to 1
Pair of 6's Thru 10's - Push
Pair of 2's Thru 5's - Loss
All Other - Loss
Strategy
The key to keeping the house edge below 5% is to learn when and how much to bet and when to fold. Here are some tips:
If you have a can not lose hand with your initial two cards, ie at least a pair of 6's, raise 3X on all three street positions right away. For example, if you're at a five dollar minimum table, your total bet would be $ 45 (for all street positions) plus the $ 5 ante. Remember, you can not lose with this hand. Bet 1x with any other hand.
After seeing 3rd Street, raise 3X with any pair of 6's or higher, or any straight flush draw. Raise 1x with any flush draw, at least two face cards (Jack or higher), any one of three cards 6-10, or any three consecutive cards.
After seeing 4th Street, raise 3X with any push or paying hand, any four to a flush or straight, raise 1x or fold with all other hands.
With the correct strategy and a little bit of Lady Luck, this game can be profitable as well as entertaining. Good Luck!
