Leonardo Fibonacci, born in Pisa, Italy in the 12th century, actually got his last name after he died. Fibonacci is a sort of a nickname. He earned fame as an outstanding mathematician. He introduced Hindu-Arabic numerals (which is what we use today) to Europe, which replaced the cumbersome Roman numerals in use at that time. Can you imagine multiplying two Roman numerals together? How would anyone calculate the answer to CXIV times LXII? I do not know how the Romans built their fantastic structures with such a certain mathematical handicap.

Fibonacci used a number series, which had been developed hundreds of years earlier, to solve some mathematical problems, and today that series bears its name. The first two numbers of the series are zero and one. Each subsequent number is determined by adding the two previous numbers together. The series becomes: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and so forth. (In some versions the initial zero is omitted.) Recently this number series gained notoriety as the 10-digit bank account number in The DaVinci Code book and movie. Some investment gurus derive ratios from the Fibonacci series to help with financial market analysis by identifying key levels of support and resistance.

How do we use this series as a gambling strategy? First modify the series by eliminating the first two numbers, zero and one. Then start with a bet of one unit. If you win, bet one unit again and keep on betting one unit until you lose. After a loss, increase your bet one level and continue increasing one level after a loss but reduce your bet one level after any win. If you win two bets in a row or two bets out of three, drop back to the first bet in the series.

You have to have a strong stomach for this system since you will get up to the higher numbers once or twice in every hour of play, but if you stick it out, the system performs very well. I would also recommend starting over if you lose five bets in a row to avoid serious damage to your bankroll. For the same reason I also would not go any higher than the 34-level.

If you play with a partner, you can bet on the opposites. For example, one bet always on black and the other always bet the red. Surprisingly, you may both end up winning.
