Poker – Tight and Loose Players

What is loose and tight play? In texas hold em the words loose and tight are used to describe the characteristics of the player. A tight player is someone who is extremely cautious with the cards that play. They will fold lots of hands and only play when they have a high pocket cards (the two cards dealt to you that no one else sees). An example might be someone who has ace, king or something similar. On the other hand a loose player will play with lower cards.

It is often easier to work out a tight player but a loose player is much more unpredictable as you will never know what cards they have got. At least when you have identified a tight player and they are betting and raising if you have not got great cards then it's probably time to fold. Reading the players is the key. Loose players are often aggressive and less likely to fold.

This can be very unpredictable. Of course some loose players have had bad beats but often they intimidate the game and those weaker players will fold. Of course bluffing is a valid method of playing the game and if you have the bottle then some say say you deserve to win.

Playing poker is not all about the cards in your hand. Some great hands of poker have been won time and time again with very little in your hand. So keep an eye on your opponents and try to work out their playing style. It will give you a much better chance of beating them at their own game.
